Both The United Kingdom and Japan are island nations, and though they are on opposite sides of the world, they have a multitude of similarities.

イギリスと日本はどちらも島国で、地球の反対側に位置しているにもかかわらず、多くの共通点があります。
それではいくつか見ていきましょう。。。

Patience, waiting...
A long queue does not deter ones heart, in fact is it something to take pride in, which is exactly what England does. Both England and Japan indeed will queue patiently for a multitude of reasons～ at the bus stop, a popular restaurant, shopping and anything fun worth waiting for.
A quiet and stoic practice forms over decades of instilling.

沈着に待つこと…
長い行列に並んでも、人の心を思いとどまらせません。むしろ、情熱をもつべきことなのです。まさにイギリスがそうなのです。イギリスも日本も、バス停、人気のレストラン、ショッピング、そして待つ価値のある楽しいことなど、様々な理由で楽しく列に並びます。
何十年にもわたる育成によって、静かでストイックな習慣が身に付くのです。

Both countries have further nuance in language, it is all about reading the context behind what is said, and more importantly, the way it is said.
For example, in English, when saying "that's interesting" in a flat or leading tone usually implies the opposite.

どちらの国でも、言葉にはさらに微妙なニュアンスがあり、重要なのは、言葉の背後にある文脈、そしてさらに重要なのは、言い方です。
例えば、英語では、「それは興味深いですね」と平坦な口調や誘導的な口調で言うと、通常は正反対の意味になります。

Japanese also has such things, "kukiyomi" (reading the air), with similar subtleties such as "it's difficult..." to imply it's not possible.
Both lean on a polite value to avoid being too negative to the receiver.
Understanding language is a gateway into understanding culture and the reason why it's not always possible for direct translations to be accurate.

日本語にも「空気を読む」という表現があり、「難しいですね…」のように、不可能であることを示唆するニュアンスも似ています。
どちらも丁寧な表現で、相手にネガティブな印象を与えないようにしています。
言語を理解することは文化を理解するための入り口であり、直訳が必ずしも正確ではない理由でもあります。

Our third similarity is a little more appreciative of the ordinary things.
Gratefulness towards food, eating with joy and a merry heart.
Fish!
Dishes known worldwide～ crispy fish and chips, and the freshest sushi.
Charlie and Toast enjoy these together to enhance their friendship.
